Back to The Roadmap: FAQ

Q: Will high school students change classes as normal with distancing guidelines in place?

A: High school students will be changing classes as they have in years past but they will not be assigned lockers and the students will be asked to wear masks while they are in between classes in the hallways, regardless of phase (other than green phase).

Q: Are masks required during PE?

A: No, they are not required while students are exercising.

Q: How will the high school work to ensure fair and equitable managing of testing and grading between virtual and on-campus students?

A: Canvas (our LMS) will allow our teachers to monitor assessments both in class and online. Our teachers will be setting up tests, quizzes, and other forms of assessment in such a way to examine both sets of students equally.

Q: How will science labs be handled and utilized if virtual learning is chosen for our family?

A: The high school will have some labs that the students will be able to complete at home on their own. However, there will also be some labs in Chemistry and Biology with underlying safety considerations, which the students will have to complete through a virtual lab.

Q: If a high school student is in a room where social distancing is possible or where plexiglass dividers are installed, can students remove their mask during seated instruction time?

A: Under our current Hamilton County mandate, our students are not able to remove their masks while they are in the building and inside of 6 feet of another student, even if a partition is in place. While the partition helps maintain physical distancing it will not completely stop the viral spread, thus a mask must be worn.

Q: In looking at the orange phase on the roadmap it looks as though 7-12th grade resource students will still be able to be on campus 5 days. Is that correct?

A: Yes, that is correct. We know the support is important for them and plan to have proctors for them on the days they would otherwise be at home. All 7-12th grade students will follow their daily schedule. A resource student will meet with their resource teacher at their scheduled time.

Q: I have a high schooler and middle schooler. If middle school is staying in their classroom until called over the radio, can my high schooler ask for my middle schooler and take them to the high school car line in the afternoon?

A: Yes, they can go to the Receptionist desk and have your middle school student called down to meet your high school student.

Q: If kids will be learning virtually, are uniforms required?

A: Students in the virtual campus will be reporting to class as if they are on campus, so we are asking for them to wear an SBA polo which will be seen on campus. They do not need to wear chapel attire since we are not gathering in a large group for chapel at this time.

Q: Will high school students be on a modified block schedule as in years past, or will they have all seven classes every day of the week?

A: Our class schedule remains the same as in years past. 7 classes on Monday and modified block the other 4 days. This will allow us to transition between phases smoothly should we need to do so.

Q: Can we purchase face shields for our kids in lieu of masks?

A: Yes, you can but at times your students will still have to wear a mask when maintaining physical distancing isn't possible. The face shields do not cover the mouth close enough to prevent viral spread through the open bottom of most face shields.
