The Silverdale Scoop: April 26th

April 26, 2017

Family Fun Night Is Coming!

The Class of 2018, under the leadership of its class officers, has taken the initiative to create this wonderful project for the K-12 Silverdale community. Our first annual Family Fun Night is coming up Friday, May 5th!

Gates at the athletic complex will open at 6:30pm with carnival games and concessions, followed by the Dreamworks movie Trolls on the football field at 8:30pm. We often talk about the benefits of a K-12 school that include the relationships built across schools, but we don't get as many opportunities as we would like to come together as one. The juniors thought initiating this school-wide fellowship would be a step in that direction, and we are thankful for their investment!

Admission is $5 per person, with a family cap of $25. Your admission includes 5 carnival game tickets, but you can pre-order bundles of 10 or purchase them at the event.

Upper School Fine Arts Concert

We hope to see you all at our Upper School Spring Concert on Thursday, April 27th at 6:30pm in the Silverdale Baptist Church sanctuary. Beginner Band, HS Band, HS Choir, MS Choir, our Dance Team, art students and our Praise Band as well as solo dancers and singers will entertain you. We will also feature select pieces from our recent musical, The Sound of Music. Please plan to attend to support our talented students and bring your friends and family - admission is free!

Winnie-the-Pooh 5th Grade Play

Winnie-the-Pooh is Christopher Robin's sweet little "bear of very little brain" - drifting peacefully through life, humming tunes and stopping frequently to eat a little honey. However, he finds himself involved in all sorts of adventures when his friend Piglet gets roped into Kanga and Roo’s household and has to take, of all things, a BATH! Rabbit, Owl and Eeyore want Pooh to fly to the rescue, but can he save Piglet in time? To find out you must make plans to see “Winnie the Pooh” presented by the SBA Fifth Grade on Thursday, May 11th for two shows, 9:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

  • Poetry Recitals: Poetry recitations are quickly approaching for our elementary students. There are so many benefits for our students in this simple process of poetry recitation. Poetry is one the oldest art and literary forms. It captures emotion and the student’s voice becomes the voice of the poet. Experts say, “if children know eight nursery rhymes by heart by the time they’re four years old, they’re usually among the best readers by the time they’re eight. (http:/timbuktu.cme/blog/why-do-children-love-poems)

Poetry and rhymes help to develop phonemic awareness, memorization skills, and the development of self-expressions. In poetry recitations, it is not just the meaning of the words but the voice, volume, inflection, pitch, and pauses that make a recitation experience one of meaning. Poetry improves critical thinking by forcing the reader to ponder deeper thoughts and make important connections. AND…. since the fear of speaking in front of a crowd is man’s number one fear, we make sure we have the children up in front of others at a very early age.

Make plans to come and support your child at our Poetry Recital. I bet you have already memorized the poem yourself!!
