Shared by 7th & 8th grade Bible teacher, Mr. Evan Pierce:As we have just begun the Holy Week, we wanted to share with everyone something that I give to my students each year. Below is a reading plan that I put together a couple of years ago for my students, so that they can read what happened on each day of the Holy Week if they would like. We wanted to provide it for our Silverdale families as well if you would like to read them individually or as a family. I would strongly encourage you to at least read John 13-17 on Thursday. It is one of the most intimate and beautiful moments of Jesus' entire ministry with his disciples in the upper room. To their shock, Jesus told His disciples He would be leaving them. Understandably, they were distraught at the news, since they had just dedicated three years of their lives to following Him. However, Jesus answered their concerns with comforting news, including the fact that He would send the Comforter to them. It is news that is still precious to those of us living two millennia later.
On Good Friday, there are three times that are significant:
9:00am - Jesus is nailed to the cross
12:00pm - Darkness covered the land
3:00pm - Jesus died
One thing that is so amazing about the fact that Jesus died at 3:00pm is that (as I have been taught) on the day of preparation, the priests would sacrifice the lamb in the temple at 3:00pm and then ring a bell signifying to the city that the sacrificial lamb had been slaughtered. As Jesus was on the cross just outside the town, He could see the temple and hear the bell ringing, and so He said, "It is finished. Father, into Your hands I commit my Spirit." The sacrificial lamb had been slaughtered. It gives me goose bumps just thinking about it.
On behalf of all the teachers at Silverdale, we thank you for the opportunity you have given us to partner with you in the education of your children. It is an opportunity and responsibility that we do not take lightly. We also sincerely hope you all have a joyful and blessed week culminating in the most important day of the year on Sunday as we celebrate the turning point in human history: the resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
He is risen!
