Literary Arts

The literary arts at SBA are comprised of creative writing, poetry recitation, reader’s theatre, Shakespeare in performance, and reading for enjoyment. The overall goal is to develop each student’s unique voice as a writer, encourage creativity and problem-solving, expose students to great works of Shakespeare and poetry, and develop a love for reading and an appreciation for the power and beauty of language as a form of communication and expression.

Three Components of the Literary Arts

Elementary PoetryRecitals

Every Spring our Elementary school hosts parents in small groups for poetry recitals. Students recite memorized poems  and display their own artwork relating to their poems. This is one of our favorite traditions at Silverdale and helps students develop an appreciation for poetry as well as helping them practice the important skill of public speaking.

"Attending to clear enunciation and correct posture, poetry recitation lays the groundwork for public speaking...The memorization of poetry and Scripture can be likened to the planting of seeds that will yield good fruit in season, perhaps by providing comfort or inspiration at another time." - Charlotte Mason
