The overall purpose of our SBA writing center is to offer students at all learning levels a safe place for individualized, peer-to-peer writing feedback with the goal of enhancing writing skills in order to create confident writers who can communicate more effectively through the written word.

We do this through three key methods:

One-on-One Tutoring: Secondary students can schedule individualized sessions at any stage of the writing process. Each session is led by a trained high school tutor matched to the student's class and writing style.
Classroom Workshops: Teachers can invite the Writing Center team into their classrooms to teach specific writing skills—such as research, formatting, and organization—or to assist during peer reviews and writing activities.
Helpful Resources: We offer handouts on topics like citations and research, and provide teachers with ready-to-use Canvas modules to guide students through each step of their writing assignments.

Together, these services foster confident, capable, and college-ready writers.

Writing Across the Curriculum

SBA’s Writing across the curriculum (WAC) program exists to create, promote, and maintain an academic culture among our faculty and students that values writing as a primary pedagogical means to learning. Our teachers design writing assignments to promote higher-order thinking, student engagement, and learning through inquiry. By implementing a variety of writing activities, both formal and informal, we seek to acknowledge the importance of a metacognitive approach to learning through practices of creative, reflective, and research writing.
