An education in the arts can enhance academic achievement, social and emotional development, civic engagement, and teamwork.

It can also improve a child’s or young adult’s confidence, motivation, and concentration. Participation in a strong arts program provides not only the opportunity to understand and appreciate the dedication needed to find success as a performer or artist but also develops citizens who are creative thinkers and problem solvers. The development of these skills will help today’s students to be successful no matter their chosen field of study.

The Arts at Silverdale is a pathway that strives to support our population of talented youth who excel in the arts and to encourage them as they learn to use the talents given to them by their Creator to impact the world for God’s kingdom through their own creations. Silverdale fine arts classes, private instruction, as well as performance and competition opportunities, meet the needs of our highly gifted arts-inspired youth who exhibit desire and motivation to pursue higher levels of achievement and learning in the Arts.

Silverdale students will have the choice of one of five areas of focus:

  • Vocal Music
  • Instrumental Music
  • Theatre
  • Dance
  • Visual Arts

Private Music Instruction

Private music lessons are available to all students, either during non-academic class times or after school. Our private instructors are incredibly talented and skilled musicians and performers who offer lessons for voice and a variety of instruments!

Band

Middle School: Beginning in sixth grade, students have the option to choose Beginner Band as an elective class. Students do not have to know how to play an instrument going into the class because they are taught to read music and the mechanics of playing the instrument they choose. Seventh graders may choose either Beginner or Intermediate Band depending on their skill level. Eighth graders may choose either Intermediate or Advanced Band based on their skill level as well.  Placement is determined as needed at the summer Band Camp held prior to the beginning of school.

High School: Students in grades nine through twelve may also choose Band as an elective. They perform and march at Silverdale football games and participate in our Christmas and spring performances.  Students from our band program have been chosen to perform with the Honors Band programs with both UTC and Shorter University.

Choir

Elementary School: Students in kindergarten through fifth grades participate in music classes each week where they learn the fundamentals of music and performance.  They gain knowledge of the great composers and the art of composition as well as the fundamentals of rhythm, note value, and basic knowledge of sightreading. All elementary students participate in an annual Christmas program that is the highlight of the elementary music department.  Fifth grade also presents a spring play or musical.

Middle School: Middle school students are given the option to choose Vocal Music as an elective class.  These students are introduced to more advanced music, and their sightreading skills and vocal techniques are emphasized. Our Middle School vocal students participate in both a Christmas and spring concert.

High School: The A Capella Ensemble class will offer music from pop a cappella groups as well as a variety of other music from classics to current popular music.  Students will also learn vocal skills that they can apply to any music they choose and be prepared to pursue music or musical theater in college.

Dance

Elementary School: Our dance program begins with classes and private lessons offered through our BOOST elementary after-school program and in Silverdale Summer Camps. We also partner with the Chattanooga Ballet Company, offering even more opportunities for our students in the area of dance.

Middle School and High School: Our upper school dance program, His Company, is offered after school. These students participate in both Christmas and spring concerts, our high school musicals, Veterans Day, and other performances as requested.

Music Appreciation

For students who enjoy music and desire to understand it better yet do not want to play an instrument or be involved in vocal music, we offer Music Appreciation classes which will not only satisfy their need for a fine arts credit but will expand their knowledge and love for music.

Praise Band

High School: The high school Praise Band at Silverdale is comprised of talented, experienced student musicians who have a heart for worship. The elements required to participate in a praise band, such as improvisation, ear training, instrumental expertise, harmonization, and vocal technique are emphasized in this class. Our high school praise band leads in worship for our high school and middle school chapels. This unique learning environment has huge potential to train students to be worship leaders and musicians because of the hands-on experience and the instruction they receive from teachers who are also musicians, singers, and worship leaders. A large majority of students who have been a part of this class are now leading worship in area churches and on college campuses for youth camps or other groups. Some of the worship leaders at Silverdale Baptist Church even began in the Silverdale Praise Band Class!

Theatre

Elementary School: Our fifth graders present either a play or musical each spring. In addition, each elementary class presents a chapel program that often includes drama, music, dramatic readings, and instrumental music or percussion.

Middle School: Middle school students may choose Drama as an elective class and they can also audition for the middle school spring play or musical without being in the drama class. This production is presented as two evening performances.

High School: Our high school theatre students may choose the Drama Class which performs a two-night play each fall. In the spring, we have open auditions for the play or musical which is presented for two nights, usually in April.  Students auditioning for musicals must have been in a vocal class for at least one year, or currently in a vocal class. Many of our drama students have gone on to pursue theatre in college and a career in the arts.

Visual Arts

Elementary School: All elementary students are exposed to visual art and have classes each week. They are taught the elements of visual art, allowing them the opportunity to imitate the masters by creating their own masterpieces. Each year, a day is set aside for the entire elementary school for an Art Festival. Guest artists are brought in to speak to and show our students their form of art. This is a fun experience for our young students because all children are artists. Silverdale wants them to continue improving their artistic skills.

Middle School & High School: Upper school students may choose visual art as an elective.  Mrs. Leslie introduces them to a variety of art forms such as painting, watercolor, sculpting, culinary arts, and many more.  Many of our high school visual art students have won art contests and several have continued on to pursue art in college and art-related careers.
